SRQ Field Rules


  • All model aircraft operation shall be in accordance with the official Academy of Model Aeronautics(AMA) Safety Code and these field rules.

  • All pilots shall be current members of the AMA.

  • Alcoholic beverages are strictly forbidden at the flying field.

  • Pilots must have both a current AMA License and a current SRQ membership or be a valid registered guest for verification when engaged in flying activities at the SRQ field.

  • SRQ will issue I.D. badges annually to active members.

    • This I.D. badge must be displayed by each member for easy viewing.

    • All SRQ members must have their current I.D. badge at the field and connected to the frequency board when a frequency pin is in use by them.

  • Sponsoring members shall be responsible for the conduct of their guest’s at all times while using the SRQ facility. Additionally, the sponsoring member must advise the guest that his use of the facility is subject to the same rules and regulations that the member must adhere to, including AMA, SRQ and any other rules and regulations that may be in effect from time to time.

  • The SRQ sponsoring member shall be responsible to make the guest aware of all SRQ Field Rules, pages 15 through 19 of the membership manual, to include the inside back cover of the manual which depicts the fly zone.

  • All members shall:

    • Ensure that spectators be aware of restricted areas

    • Supervise their children;

    • See that their pit area is free of litter, airplane parts, etc.


  • All transmitters must meet AMA and FCC current standards.

  • Each pilot must have the correct SRQ frequency control pin attached to his transmitter prior to operation of that transmitter.

  • All transmitters shall be placed in the transmitter impound when not in use.

  • Frequency control pins may not be removed from another pilot’s transmitter without the acknowledgement of that pilot and the placement of that transmitter into the impound area.

  • Anyone operating a transmitter without possession of the correct frequency control pin, thereby causing the crash of another pilot’s aircraft on the same frequency who is in possession of the correct frequency control pin, is liable for all damages and injuries resulting from such crash. These may include, but are not necessarily limited to:

    • Repair or replacement of radio equipment;

    • Repair or replacement of engine; Repair or replacement of aircraft.

  • The monetary value of damage to models should be determined by the parties involved. If satisfactory assessment of such damage cannot be reached in this manner, all parties agree to be bound by an evaluation made by the Club’s current Board of Directors.

  • Any accident involving personal injury or damage to property other than models shall be immediately reported to an SRQ officer or current member of the Board of Directors.


  • A single line (flight line), north of the runway pilot line, has been established for all modeling activity, one side of which is for flying, the other side for pilots, helpers and spectators.

  • Prohibited actions include, but not limited to:

    • Deliberate flying behind the flight line.

    • Directing exhaust or prop wash toward another model or modeler.

    • Flying beyond the designated boundaries of the field.

    • Taxiing in the pit area.

  • PreFlight actions:

    • Preflight your model before the first flight of the day.

    • When starting your engine, have the model restrained.

    • Adjustment of the model engine must be done from behind the propeller.

  • All turbine powered flights must have a qualified spotter next to the pilot during the entire flight. A qualified spotter shall be a current AMA member who is at least 18 years of age.

  • Aircraft stalled on the runway should be retrieved as quickly as possible.

  • Intent to walk across the flight line or onto the runway shall be announced before doing so. A spotter should be requested by the person entering the runway area, to watch for landing aircraft.

  • Engines are to be run in the start-up area only, not the pits.

  • Engine break-in or extended engine tune-up is to be done in the designated break-in area at the east end of the pits.


  • The land upon which the Sarasota R/C Squadron flying field is built is owned by Sarasota County. There is a long-term lease between the two entities. Among other things, this lease requires that sound levels at the field boundaries, generated by the model aircraft, not exceed the levels set fourth in the county ordinance. For this reason, model aircraft operated at the Bee Ridge flying field shall be flown within the designated flying area and shall not exceed the following static sound emission limits:

  • Aircraft to be on a hard surface, sound meter 12 inches high in the plane of the propeller, greater of right or left side. Large aircraft whose propellers go "supersonic" in flight shall not be flown regardless of the static noise level tested. Primary Static Test Standard, In order not to exceed the County noise standards at the field boundaries model aircraft shall not be flown outside the defined flying box.

  • Servicing engines on the runway is prohibited.

  • Two-stroke engines will be equipped with an effective muffler.

  • There shall be no more than five (5) aircraft in the air at one time except during controlled exhibitions.

  • All fixed-wing powered aircraft flights shall be controlled from a designated area adjacent to the runway.

  • Pilots shall ensure safe clearance onto the runway by looking both ways, then announcing their intent to enter the runway for takeoff prior to doing so.

  • Pilots shall announce their intent to land prior to doing so.

  • All aircraft shall land on the active runway of the flight line in accordance with a left hand or right-hand traffic pattern approach. Wind direction shall determine the appropriate approach direction.

  • Emergency and dead stick landing aircraft shall have priority.

  • Aircraft sound emission limits:

    • Statically with plane on a hard surface: meter 12" high in propeller plane, greater of left and right sides: 104dB(A) at 9ft., or 103dB(A) at 10ft., or 98dB(A) at 18ft. (primary static test standard).

    • In flight: 55dB(A) at Misty Creek, 71dB(A) at 440ft., limits at other appropriate distances to be determined using the club performance curve standard.

    • Enforcement on an airplane-by-airplane basis.

  • Voluntary testing at monthly testing sessions on Saturday following each monthly club meeting or during the week as prearranged with a committee member.

    • Individually as requested by a committee member.

    • At sanctioned events.

    • Mandatory compliance cited airplane grounded.

    • Mandatory retest and certification before flying cited airplane.

    • Permanent records kept by committee.

  • Penalties for non-compliance; referred to Board of Directors for appropriate action if:

    • Member refuses to comply with test request,

    • Aircraft is not retested and certified within 30 days,

    • Aircraft is flown without retesting and certification,

    • Details posted in newsletter.

  • Advisory assistance to resolve technical problems.


  • If an AMA or SRQ rule is violated by an individual, the infraction must be brought to the attention of the Safety Officer by no less than three (3) SRQ members. This infraction will be reviewed and documented, and the individual will be notified by the Safety Officer of the violation.

  • If a second infraction is reported in the same manner as above, the Safety Officer will report the infraction to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors may suspend that individual’s flying privileges for thirty (30) days.

  • If a third infraction is reported to the Board of Directors in the same manner as above within a twelve (12) month period, the individual’s SRQ membership may be terminated in accordance with Article V of the SRQ By-Laws. However, he may reapply after a one year period.

  • Infractions cannot be accumulated beyond one year. The Safety Officer will maintain appropriate records, such that an infraction occurring after one year from the first infraction shall be treated in accordance with paragraph 1 above and restart the sequence.

  • Should an individual violate his suspension, his SRQ membership may be terminated, in accordance with Article V of the SRQ By-Laws.
